Japan pulls you in from the first moment. Bright lights, quiet shrines, bamboo forests, mountain views and cities that never sit still. This 11 day vegan Japan tour takes you from the energy of Tokyo to the history of Hiroshima, with time to experience each destination instead of rushing through it.
Travel with other vegan travellers as you discover Japan’s culture, history and incredible vegan Japanese food. Your Tour Host keeps each day running smoothly and arranges optional group meals whenever a meal isn’t included, making vegan travel in Japan simple, social and stress free.
We begin in Tokyo, where historic Asakusa, lively Shibuya, and other fascinating districts reveal the city’s unique blend of tradition and modern life. From there, we board Japan’s famous Shinkansen Bullet Train to Kanazawa, where traditional markets, samurai streets, geisha districts and Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan’s most celebrated landscape gardens, reveal a slower side of the country.
Next comes Kyoto, Japan’s cultural heart. Wander through the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, visit Tenryu ji, Nonomiya Shrine, Nijo Castle, and the historic streets of Gion, Kyoto’s renowned Geisha District. A day trip to Nara brings towering temples, peaceful parkland and the city’s famous free roaming deer, before returning to Kyoto to enjoy more of the city at your own pace.
The journey ends in Hiroshima and Miyajima Island. Walk through the Peace Memorial Park, reflecting on Hiroshima’s past and its message of peace, before discovering the island’s famous floating Torii gate, Itsukushima Shrine, forest trails and panoramic views from Mount Misen. It is a memorable finale to a journey that blends history, culture and natural beauty.
This small vegan group tour combines iconic sights with the company of like minded travellers. Your Tour Host takes care of the planning and logistics, and arranges an optional group meal whenever a meal is not included.
Join the group when you wish or enjoy some independent time, while still sharing the same unforgettable journey.
At each location we also offer a variety of activities which we have left as optional to suit each individuals tastes and budget. These include:

* Shared meals, your way
Breakfast is included every day, along with selected lunches and dinners throughout the trip.
For all other lunches and dinners, your Tour Host will arrange a group meal at one of our favourite local vegan eateries. At each mealtime, you’re free to join the group and simply pay for what you order, or head out and discover local vegan cafés, restaurants, and food markets independently.
We all have different tastes, appetites, and routines, so this approach lets you enjoy each day in the way that best suits you.
This gives you the flexibility to explore independently, while making it easy to enjoy shared experiences with the group whenever you prefer.
Welcome to Japan!
Your adventure begins in Tokyo, a vibrant city where neon streets, serene temples, and local vegan treats await. After checking in, take time to settle into your hotel before joining your Tour Leader for a relaxed local outing to get your bearings and feel the city’s pulse.
In the evening, you can join the group for your first vegan-friendly meal at a nearby restaurant, a gentle introduction to Tokyo life.
During the tour, all meals marked as optional are arranged for your convenience. You can join in with everything arranged for you or you can choose to take some time out to explore at your own pace to discover some hidden gems. The GoVegan Travel map and your Tour Leader can help you find some tasty vegan options.

Today we explore Tokyo’s vibrant streets, visiting a selection of most popular areas, from the historic Asakusa, Ueno, and Yanaka districts, to the modern highlights around Shibuya and Tokyo Tower. We can't fit everything into one day, so we'll choose the ones that fit the group the best. Wander bustling streets, discover hidden temples, and soak up the mix of traditional and contemporary Tokyo culture.
After exploring some of Tokyo's best bits, if time permits, you can join an optional hands-on vegan sushi making course, where you’ll create beautiful, delicious rolls.

After breakfast, we take our first Shinkansen 'Bullet Train' from Tokyo to Kanazawa, gliding past scenic countryside on Japan’s famous high-speed rail. Upon arrival, we’ll take time to grab a local vegan lunch before heading out on an in-depth tour through Kanazawa’s charming streets.
Visit Omicho Market with its vibrant food stalls and the historic Higashi Chaya District, famed for preserved teahouses and geisha culture. Immerse yourself in the colours, flavours, and traditions that make Kanazawa so unique.
In the evening, join the group for an optional vegan-friendly dinner and a chance to enjoy some local drinks.

Experience the timeless charm of Kanazawa with a full day of exploration through its most iconic sights. In the morning, we’ll visit the celebrated Kenrokuen Garden, stroll around Kanazawa Castle, and take a deeper look into the Higashi Chaya District, where traditional teahouses offer a glimpse into Japan’s Edo-period heritage. We end the day with a walk through the historic Nagamachi Samurai District, where narrow streets and preserved samurai houses tell stories of the city’s feudal past.
If there's any free time after a busy day exploring, perhaps revisit the market or enjoy a quiet café while watching the world go by.

After a scenic Shinkansen ride from Kanazawa, we arrive in Kyoto, Japan’s cultural heart. We visit Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its striking architecture and historical significance, and once home to the Tokugawa shoguns. From there, we’ll visit Gion, the traditional Geisha District, where narrow streets, wooden machiya houses, and traditional teahouses offer a glimpse into Kyoto’s living heritage.
After exploring the Geisha District, your Tour Leader will arrange an optional group meal for those who wish to continue the day's experience.

Today we head out of Kyoto and make the short journey to one of the city’s most scenic areas, Arashiyama.
Our visit takes in the famous Bamboo Grove, where towering stalks create a calm, atmospheric setting, followed by Tenryu-ji Temple and Nonomiya Shrine. We then cross the iconic Togetsukyō Bridge, enjoying views over the river and surrounding hills. The pace is unhurried, with time to pause, take photos, and enjoy the natural setting.
The evening is yours to relax, explore Kyoto further or join the optional group dinner at a nearby vegan-friendly restaurant.

We make the short journey to visit nearby Nara, Japan’s first permanent capital.
Explore the iconic Todai-ji Temple and wander through Nara Park, known for its friendly deer and naturally serene surroundings. The area feels calmer and more open than the cities, offering a different side of Japan. After the visit, we return to Kyoto for a relaxed evening.

Today is flexible and unstructured, allowing the opportunity to enjoy Kyoto at your own pace.
Spend the morning wandering city streets, visiting local cafes, or simply relaxing and enjoying the day at your own pace.
Why not join an optional cultural experience such as a traditional tea ceremony, calligraphy workshop, or sake tasting, offering deeper insight into Japanese traditions and arts.

Today we board our final Shinkansen 'Bullet Train' as a group from Kyoto to Hiroshima, enjoying our final views of the beautiful Japanese countryside from the comfort of these wonderful high-speed trains.
After arriving and exploring the local area, we'll take one of Hiroshima's many local trams to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, including the A-Bomb Dome, Children’s Peace Monument, and a gentle stroll along the Motoyasu River, reflecting on the city’s history and resilience.

Today we'll spend the day discovering the spiritual and scenic highlights of Miyajima Island. We ride local trams and take a ferry to reach this iconic island, to be met on arrival by its famous 'floating' Torii gate.
Stroll along Omotesando Street, the main shopping avenue, full of charming shops, street snacks, and perfect photo stops. We visit the historic Itsukushima Shrine and admire its vermillion gates rising from the water. Next, we wander to Daisho-in Temple at the base of Mount Misen, a peaceful spot filled with history and ornate statues, before taking the Mount Misen Ropeway to the summit for panoramic views. Finally, we'll enjoy a short scenic walk through Momijidani Park with its forested paths and seasonal colours.

Your journey through Japan comes to an end today, but we hope you're leaving with unforgettable memories and new friendships. Enjoy a final breakfast at your leisure before checking out.
Your Tour Leader will be on hand to assist with any last-minute questions or transportation needs. Should you wish to return to Tokyo, Kansai, or continue your travels elsewhere in Japan, we can help arrange Shinkansen tickets, flights, and accommodation either at booking or during your tour.
If you'd like to extend your stay in Hiroshima or nearby cities, we're happy to arrange this or offer guidance to find the perfect accommodation. Your journey may be ending, but the memories will stay with you. Until next time!

Most of our tours begin in Tokyo, so either Tokyo Narita (NRT) or Tokyo Haneda (HND) are your best options.
Haneda is closer to the city center and usually cheaper to get from, but Narita has way more international flights. Both work perfectly fine!
Private transfers aren’t included as standard because Japan’s trains and buses are so good (and a lot cheaper!) and we prefer to give our guests the option to choose what works best for their style and budget.
That said, we’re happy to arrange private cars for you if you prefer – just let us know.
Most people take the train – it’s fast, reliable, and super straightforward.
Haneda is so close that the train or monorail is usually the winner!
Super easy!
During the your Tour Leader can arrange the limousine bus from central Hiroshima straight to the airport (¥1,500, ~45–60 min). Or if you prefer a private transfer we can book that too – just say the word.
Of course! This is a great option if booking a simple two-way flight is cheaper or more convenient.
You can take the Shinkansen bullet train (~5 hours, ~¥20,000 / $130) or a quick domestic flight (similar price if booked early). We’ll help you sort the best option.
Yes! Breakfast is included daily, either at the hotel or close-by if a better vegan option is available, so you only need to budget for lunch and dinner (plus snacks and coffee, of course).
Yes, we can book extra nights for you in the same accommodation, if available, so you can arrive before the tour starts or stay on after it ends.
Many guests like to arrive a day or two early to settle in and recover from jet lag before the tour begins. Others prefer to stay an extra day or two at the end so they can explore a bit more at their own pace or just relax without too many activities before heading home.
Of course this will vary from person to person depending on the style of restaurant and number of course ordered, but as a general guide:
A relaxed daily total for lunch + dinner is usually ¥3,000–6,000 (~$20–40).
Japan has a good choice of delicious vegan and vegetarian options these days!
Absolutely – every meal-time your Tour Leader organises an optional group lunch and dinner.
It’s a great way to try new places without the stress of always needing finding somewhere yourself, but you’re always free to explore on your own too.
Not if you're joining one of the twice daily group meals. Your Tour Leader takes care of reservations for anyone who wants to join the group meals, and there are always plenty of walk-in vegan-friendly spots if you feel like going solo.
Absolutely. Every restaurant, market, and experience we include has been chosen with vegan travellers in mind. You won’t need to compromise on your diet, and you’ll get to enjoy the rich variety of vegan options Japan has to offer.
Yes. While we have included guided activities and group experiences more or less every day, the tours are designed to allow some free time for you to explore independently, shop, choose and optional activity or simply relax.
The tour involves moderate walking each day, including exploring cities, visiting temples, wandering markets, and discovering local sites. Therefore at least a moderate level of fitness is required to enjoy this tour to the full. Comfortable shoes and a sense of adventure will also help.
Your tour price includes all accommodation, daily breakfast, guided activities, twice-daily optional group meals and all transport within the tour and its included activities.
You’ll also have the support of your Tour Leader throughout the trip to make sure everything runs smoothly.
You can find more details in the 'Inclusions' and Itinerary' sections above
Most hotels, cafés and even some trains have free Wi-Fi, but as ever, speed and quality can't be guaranteed
The best and easiest option is to either arrange an eSim before you travel, or grab a pocket Wi-Fi at the airport (unlimited data, ~$30–50 for the whole trip). These can easily be booked online as well to save time and are returned using a pre-paid envelope at the end of your stay. The benefit of portable Wi-Fis, which are pretty unique to Japan, is the simple ease with which you can share the signal with your other devices or travelling partners
Your Tour Leader can help you pick one up on Day 1 if you miss out at the airport.
All transport during the tour (trains, buses, ferries, trams and taxis) is included. The only journeys not covered are your arrival transfer and your departure from Hiroshima (or back to Tokyo if you choose that) and any optional activiites that you choose.
Whenever luggage is involved we include private taxis or vans to/from stations so you don’t have to drag bags on public transport. On lighter days we usually walk or take the subway – it’s quick and fun!
Tipping isn’t part of Japanese culture – no need at restaurants, taxis, or hotels. The only exception people sometimes make is a small thank-you gift or envelope for the Tour Leader at the end of the trip if you feel they went above and beyond (entirely optional and always appreciated).
